Heifer supports farmers in developing countries in building sustainable livelihoods by giving and ‘passing on the gift’ of animals and offering training. Thanks to a subsidy from the Dutch government some years ago, Heifer had the opportunity to start a program in Ghana with cows and to continue and elaborate the current dairy farming in Cameroon and Albania. In partnership with Better Future different cross- and in-country workshops were organized for local dairy farmers and local people from Heifer. The in-country workshops took place in the form of several development experiences, in which Dutch senior professionals worked together with
the farmers and Heifer people on local issues in Ghana and Cameroon. The cases ranged from forming a dairy farming cooperative to the marketing of milk and fundraising opportunities for the local Heifer organization. During the cross-country workshops focus was on the sharing of experiences and knowledge between participating farmers on the dairy food chain, technical aspects of dairy farming and the development of entrepreneurship.
Renee Mars (participant in Ghana experience): “Working on concrete projects together with the Ghanaian participants proved to be really
stimulating. The focus, energy and trust that they showed still stimulates me in my daily life. I learned that I can count on myself and on my capabilities.”
