Each year, 1,6 million people die worldwide because of indoor air pollution, caused by the use of solid fuel - such as wood, coal, animal dung - for cooking (source:
www.who.org). Over half a million of these people live in India. With the Philanthropy by Design initiative, Philips Design has designed a a low-tech and low-cost stove for safe and healthy indoor cooking for low income rural households. The design is patent-free and can therefore be distributed by various organizations.
During the Future Leaders program in India, 2008, a team of Future Leaders and Business Leaders worked together with Erin foundation in
order to see how the latter could distribute the low smoke stove in Karnataka state. Their joint goal was to support manufacture and distribute 250.000 stoves in the coming five years, and as such improve the health of many women and their families.
Shortly after the program, a team of committed Business Leaders set up the Adopt-a-Stove Foundation in The Netherlands. Under the motto “"Adopt a stove and give an Indian family
the chance to live a healthier life" that provides financial and moral support for the project, in order to contribute to its sustainability.
Currently, a production shed has been built, and
production and marketing of the stoves have started with the help women’s Self Help Groups in the villages.
